Advanced tips that actually change nights
These are crew habits that show up in full-game playthroughs and the widely watched “10 advanced tips” videos — not demo folklore. Use them after you know the five-question loop. Deep dives live on detection, customers, and 13 shifts.
1. Open the computer before you chat
The N.E.T. terminal is the impartial record: occupation, dates, living/deceased flags, height, marks. Ask questions that test those fields — not small talk. If the file says mechanic and they say teacher, that is enough. Expiration dates and “I just came from…” stories that contradict the notice board are the next cheapest tells.
2. Spend the five questions on contradictions
You get five scripted prompts per visitor. Burn them on name, job, family, “where were you just now,” and one follow-up on whatever the screen already contradicts. Emotiscope / emotion detector is a tiebreaker, not a sixth prompt — detector guide.
3. Never charge a fake, then shoot
Checkout-then-execute still counts as a miss. Deny service or kill before the transaction completes. Same rule on the forecourt: finish the ID loop before you wave a driver through.
4. Know which tool the night actually needs
- Emotiscope — mute visitors who answer when the file says they cannot speak; “craving human flesh” and time-displacement headaches (Dave Buster’s 9/11 line in a 1993 setting) are execute flags.
- Anomaly Lens — late unlock. Amelia Kramer can be invisible; Kevin Larson can be a dancing fake; Wade Callahan grows a face parasite; Yasmin’s gold jewelry disappears.
- Notice board — Joe’s Diner fire, obituaries, closed library, Europe travel ban, wanted posters. Read it at shift start.
5. True Ending money after the August 21 price pass
Only personal funds pay the $250 surgery. August 21 equalized product prices so shop RNG is less likely to block True Ending. Still: commissions, live rats in the dumpster, prize-wheel cash, and skipping vanity buys beat hoping wages alone cover Shift 13. Steam Cloud saves (same patch) make a Shift 12 backup less painful.
6. Hunt and bus habits that save wipes
- Pre-place a Bear Trap for Demented / Phantom eye-contact kites and another on the morning-bus approach.
- Empty driver seat = board. Occupied seat = wait. Two players confirming a fake bus can spawn the Fast Red Creature that disables guns.
- Rewind every Jack-in-the-Box unless you want Last Performance — ground traps do little to a floating Marionette.
- Mute open mics during Hunts. On Endless, glance at the tree line for July 29 Rakes.
Counters: monsters. Loadout: weapons & traps.
7. August 21 quality-of-life you should actually use
- Per-player volume sliders — turn down proximity chaos without muting callouts.
- Steam Cloud — enable it before a True Ending money run.
- Start-of-shift notes were re-randomized — read them; old screenshot guides go stale.
- If lobbies still fail, the networkissues beta branch remains the documented Steam workaround — networking.
Habits that still get crews killed
- Trusting last night’s verdict on Clyde, Andal, or a Driver.
- Shooting human Clyde and soft-locking ending routes.
- Dumping the arsenal at the Shift 13 Dentist instead of running to Clyde.
- Leaving the register empty while everyone searches cars.
- Treating Norbert or Herbert like a standard Entity summon — they usually are not.

Frequently asked questions
What is the single highest-value habit? Reveal answer.
Computer first, questions second, execute before checkout. Everything else is a tiebreaker.
Did August 21 change detection rules? Reveal answer.
It added fifteen customers and QoL (Cloud, volume, equalized prices). The five-question plus ID loop did not change — the roster got longer.
