Saves, Steam Cloud, and manual backups
No manual save. The game writes only at shift end or major story beats. The August 20โ21 patch enabled Steam Cloud. Back up before a True Ending money run or Shift 12 ending branch.
How saves work
You see the shift็ป็ฎ screen before the write completes. Use "quit to menu" โ never force-kill. Total party wipe only restarts the current shift; money and ratings persist. Shift 13 failure carries rating penalties into the next run. Online play uses the host's save.
Windows path (not %AppData%)
Win+R paste %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\Kwalee\ShiftAtMidnight. The %AppData% (Roaming) folder is wrong โ it will not match. Always exit the game before copying the entire folder.
Steam Cloud (August 21 patch)
Library โ Properties โ General โ Enable Steam Cloud checkboxes. The cloud copy also lives in userdata\<SteamID>\3722330. When restoring a Shift 12 backup, do not blindly pick the cloud version. Cloud saves do not transfer to Xbox.
Deck / Linux transfer
Proton path: compatdata/3722330/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/LocalLow/Kwalee/ShiftAtMidnight. Cloud sync usually eliminates manual copying. Do not copy into the Demo prefix (4050060).
Xbox and Steam are separate
Xbox / PC Game Pass / Cloud Streaming share the Microsoft account. Steam saves do not cross over. Decide your platform before Shift 9.
Backing up before ending branches (Shifts 11โ12)
Copy the LocalLow folder, play through one ending, then restore. Switching folders pauses cloud upload โ confirm local is uploaded before swapping, or the post-ending save will overwrite your backup.
Rollback and corruption
Never kill the process during a night transition. Verify files first. Only delete after confirming corruption and only if you have a copy.
